As with many of our attachments the standard range doesn't always satisfy the customers requirements. We have made a number of specialised booms for handling varying products.
Two such examples are included here, firstly our twin boom.
The handling of IBC's and similar bags with hoop handles was answered with our twin boom design. Our customer had attempted prior to using the attachment , to handle bags using the fork truck forks, however , two problems were encountered.
The square section of the fork blade had tendency to cut into the handles damaging them, our round boom profile suited the handles.
In addition the forks had to be raised one metre to enter the handles, this resulted in lost lift and the obscuring of driver forward visibility due to the truck carriage being at an inconvenient height. By supplying our booms with a raised centreline the bags could be handled with the carriage in a low position , allowing full driver visibility.
Only a very bespoke application for handling long hollow shafts.
One of our customers approached us with a unique problem of handling their product a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). During the manufacture of their product they wished at first to handle their products long centre tube with rotator support through the core, with the addition of some protective rubber sleeves over the boom, as they did not want to scratch the core.
Once the tube had been assembled however , the core was occupied by wiring from the generator. They needed to transport the assembly to a test room were the base would lie in a 'v'block for inspection and testing.
SMC devised two features to enable this. Firstly a lifting hoop which clamped around the tube suspended from the boom shaft which projected between the rotor support arms. Secondly ad upside down vee beneath the root of the boom shaft supported the back of the tube, as the lift of the hoop clamp was behind the turbines centre of gravity. The shaft was then held in place by a strip until it was ready to be lowered onto the test vee block.
Our design proposal was presented with the customers own product shown in the device so they could fully visualise the solution, we also recommended the fork truck size required and supplied the attachment within the customers lead time , so they could continue manufacture of their new product.
